Why do some people say catholicism is not really christian ?

ignorance and fear are my thoughts. when i moved to the south i was the only Catholic in my neighborhood and workplace. thankfully, we became friends enough that people would ASK instead of remain ignorant and thus fearful . the fear is of me and after learning we weren't all the evil they thought -- they then feared a new reality - that their pastors, bishops, et al LIED to them. i would always remind them that it was not done intentionally but their pastors and such were also fearful and it was a vicious cycle and how our discussions and friendships were the ONLY way to bridge the divide!
