How would I reinforce a dowel?

So my friends and I are breaking wooden dowels (1" diameter) like crazy! Once we broke one, duct taped it back together (it felt UNBREAKABLE), and it broke again AT A DIFFERENT PRESSURE POINT! So how can we make our dowels unbreakable?
