How many bags am I allowed to bring on a plane?

I am getting off before my planned destination, so I can only have Carry-on's, or my bags would go to a different state that I plan to go to... I have a backpack, a gift bag, and a duffle bag... Keep in mind, the backpack is JAM packed... But not very heavy, cause it's just clothes.. Also, the duffle bag is FILLED with Pastrie's... Does anyone know how strict they are with that??. I understand that you are not aloud to bring liquids or creams, but I was told that tarts/food and such are aloud!?.
