How do I keep the top "minutes" measurement bar for songs on my iPod Touch screen?

I have an ipod touch. Whenever I play songs, there's supposed to be a "minutes" bar on the top of the vertical screen to scan the length of a song, but it keeps disappearing. Sometimes it reappears, and I don't know how it comes or goes. How do I retrieve it and keep it there?
